Aurora Ave’s ‘Pearl’ has completely taken the heart of multiple listeners across the world. With over 5,000 streams shortly after release, there is so much beauty to unravel with this notable piece of music. ‘Pearl’ is a song that’s perfect for the season, with a sunny vibe and lively beat. The outro brings an overwhelming wave of calmness that settles the senses and highlights the gorgeous sounds of Samara’s voice. The band drove multiple influences for this piece bringing rock n’ roll, indie and jazz into a collective.
When it came to creating the song, Koh had plenty of comments as it had been in production for the past 4 years. “It’s been around since the inception of the band. We asked ourselves the question, ‘What do we want this song to sound like? The baseline made it all the way through production. [When it comes] to instrumentation, I like to focus on what holds the melodic structure down. Whether it’s Gabi on lead, or Sam on tenor, anything that can carry the attention of the listener is important.”
In early stages, the song started off “poppy” as the band members describe, and it wasn’t until a specific rehearsal and outside influences that shifted the work. “I feel like there was a big shift at one point,” states Gabi “The 1st demo was very ‘poppy’. One rehearsal last year, I didn’t have all my gear, so there was a lot of distortion and we actually really liked the rock sound.” By the last couple of stages of the song they believed it finally became cohesive. Vocals had a long journey as well, but ultimately after many sessions and encouraging Samara to rip free, it was only a while before production had ceased. Henry expressed how it took a while to get all the pieces in the right place but gives a lot of credit to Micheal and Koh for production.
‘Pearl’ also happens to be the debut for lead singer Samara, as it’s her first time leading vocals in the band. When asking Samara about her feelings leading the new song, she had hesitations but went at it full force. “To be honest Mike helped me through the whole process. I’m still very new to this genre. My first love/music other than gospel is R&B so this is a very different sound I’m putting out there. Listening to the instrumentals [made] me feel a variety of emotions; happy, confident, ready for the world. I definitely see sunny days after the storm when I hear this track and I hope the same for anyone else.”
There were plenty of inspirations and feelings behind the song, as it pulled from various genres. But Henry had a beautiful note about the core of the piece. “The sample is very nostalgic for a younger time in our lives. We’ve grown a lot and I feel like that’s what this song is about. Finding your place in the world, and following your route. The concept of the pearl. Finding that small, perfect stone at the bottom of the sea that’s representative of you. And how long it takes to foster that [gem].”
