'breaking even' with Minor Issue

“Everyone has something inside them. You just have to find something to channel it out.” - Kristian

Straight out of the heart of Texas stands minor issue, a San Antonio-based band with a blend of stringful, grunge, and exhilarating melodies. With an extensive reservoir, their genre is truly unique and can’t be categorized. Their alternative sound hints at shoegaze and metal, which has translated to well over 25,000 streams on their records.

Each member’s path to the band is unique, and somehow they all fell together by fate. Julian, whose father was also a musician, always knew he wanted to start a band. He first connected with Elle. “She posted a video of her playing and I was like, ‘let's jam,’” he recalled. “We didn’t have any drummers; that’s how we found Kristian.” Kenny knew Kristian for a while, dating back to when he was in another cover band. “My best friend, his younger brother, was in a band with Kenny,” Kristian shared.

Dating back well into their childhoods, their origins started with parental influences and the nature of having inquisitive youth. “I lived with my grandma while my mom was overseas,” Elle stated. “I played on my mom’s old piano. I started going through a hard time and fell into an all-girl band. A girl at a party asked if I knew how to play any instruments. The next day I bought a guitar. It was something I didn’t know I needed.” On the contrary, Kenny had always had it around. “When I was like 6 months old, my dad would put me to bed to hair metal bands like KISS. It’s always been there; I always wanted to join a band.”

An entire realm of alternative music surrounds their songs. With complete bends of shoegaze to rock and metal, when asked about their genre, it was hard to articulate. “We ask ourselves that all the time,” they laughed. “The best thing is to call it alternative. Whatever music is out, this is the alternative choice.” Whether it’s the strong baseline from ‘apparition’ or the slow groove in ‘breaking even,’ they truly encompass a multitude of sounds and still find a way, no matter the tone, to make an audience feel something. Their creative process circulates around this diversity. “Parts and sections of songs fly out of us,” Kristian stated. “Then we have puzzle pieces and we put them all together.”

The band embraces the reality of harsh times but still continues to show resilience and strength through their work. Music allows them to truly come together and express themselves in a refreshing and unique way. “I got tired of feeling like shit all the time,” Elle admitted. “Doing the things that I don’t want to do at the moment is more aligned to me than achieving any dream or goal. Mindful practices. Showing up even though I had a bad day—that pays off.” United through true authenticity and their individual drives, they manage to persevere and grow, simply for the art of creation.
